The One57 skyscraper is a residential tower located in the Midtown area of Manhattan. Due to its expensive square footage and the wealthy owners who reside there, this building is nicknamed “The Billionaire Building”.
Its total height is 306 meters, which makes it one of the tallest buildings in New York. It was the tallest residential building in the world until the construction of the 432 Park Avenue skyscraper.
A building of standing
The One57 skyscraper is located at 157 West 57th Street. It is a long glass building with a concrete structure. Its modern style design is signed by the French architect Christian de Portzamparc.
This exceptional designer was the first Frenchman to receive the Pritzer Prize (1994). The interior decorations are the work of Danish architect Thomas Juul-Hansen.
The tower houses 135 private apartments. These exceptionally plush homes occupy the top 9 floors of the building. They were acquired by very wealthy people.
The units on the top two floors of the tower are each valued at about $100 million. Those between the 65th and 72nd floors are worth nearly 50 million. These are the most expensive apartments ever marketed in New York.
A multi-faceted building
The second floors of the One57 skyscraper include some 200 rooms that are managed by the luxury Park Hyatt hotel. The presence of hotel services explains why there are also restaurants and stores on the lower floors.
Gary Barnett, president of Extell Development Company, was responsible for the design of the building. It took him nearly 15 years to acquire each of the lots on which the skyscraper stands. Construction began in April 2009 and was completed in 2014.
The sale of the apartments began in 2012. Within days, it was announced that the two top-floor penthouses had sold for $100 million. Six months later, 50% of the apartments had found takers. The famous apartment on the 75th floor, “The Winter Garden”, was sold a few weeks later for an undisclosed amount.
One57 in figures
One57 is 306 meters high. This makes it the 7th tallest skyscraper in New York. The builders indicate that it has 90 floors, although it is listed as a 75-story building plus 2 basements. The total area is 79,299 square meters. There are 8 high-speed elevators.
The lobby is free to visit and you can book a table at the gourmet restaurant or do some shopping in the luxury boutiques. The rest of the skyscraper is reserved for the private use of residents.
