Bank of America Tower, what you should know
A clean building
The Bank of America Tower is one of the 10 tallest buildings in New York. Its long silhouette is part of the Skyline, the famous city skyline in which the most famous New York urban buildings can be seen.
It is an original skyscraper that seduces the eye with its irregular shape and all-glass cladding.
The Bank of America stands in the Midtown area of Manhattan. The tower is located on 6th Avenue, between 42nd and 43rd Streets.
One of its special features is that it uses environmentally friendly materials and systems. We can observe a wind turbine on one of the spires of its roof and an insulated glazing on the whole height of the building.
These windows capture and make maximum use of natural light and contain heat. Light-emitting diodes automatically adjust the intensity of natural light.
The urinals are equipped with a low-power consumption vacuum system and are waterless. The building is equipped with a rainwater catchment system and the air is clean thanks to its air filters.
Finally, the materials used in the construction of the tower are recycled components.
The Bank of America Tower in figures
The Bank of America Tower is a commercial building with 58 floors, 3 of which are underground. The lower floors are organized as a mezzanine and house the 42nd Street – Bryant Park / Fifth Avenue subway station.
The building has 52 Schindler elevators. Its roof reaches 288 meters, but its highest antenna is 1197 feet high. The surface area is approximately 200’000 m².
The construction of the building began in 2004 and was completed in 2009. To make room for it, a number of buildings had to be demolished, including the Diplomat Hotel and the famous Henry Miller Theater.
The latter was then rebuilt on the same site. It kept its neo-classical facade, but its auditorium was installed in the basement. This theater is now called Stephen Sondheim and its entrance is next to the skyscraper.
The building has often been nicknamed The BOAT (for Bank of America Tower) or the Air Filter. The cost of its construction is estimated at 1 billion dollars.
