The incredible floating park
Little Island is a must-see destination for travelers in search of something new and different. Suspended over the Hudson River, New York’s floating island is a futuristic and captivating green setting. Visitors can enjoy a multitude of activities on Little Island. Take a stroll, have a picnic, contemplate the surrounding scenery or attend a free show… There’s so much to enjoy during your stay in this hidden New York treasure.
The origins of Little Island
Little Island is the result of several years’ work and development. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, New York looked for ways to protect the city and bring it back to life. The idea of a “Dryline” to protect lower Manhattan was considered, but never came to fruition.
The entrance
It was then that the project to rebuild Pier 54, damaged in the hurricane, took shape with the creation of Little Island. This futuristic park on stilts was the brainchild of millionaire Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, in 2012. In partnership with the Hudson River Park Trust, they have created a public park offering an immersive experience in nature right in the heart of New York.
Did you know?
It was at nearby Pier 54 that the survivors of the sinking of the Titanic arrived in 1912.
