New York in winter is transformed into a winter fairytale, and nothing captures the magic of the season better than its iconic ice rinks. Whether you’re an experienced skater or a curious beginner, the Big Apple offers a variety of rinks that promise unforgettable moments under the city’s twinkling lights.
Manhattan’s iconic ice rinks
Wollman Rink: the Central Park experience
Nestled in the heart of Central Park, the Wollman Rink offers one of the most magical skating experiences in the world. With the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, this historic rink, open since 1949, immerses you in the authentic atmosphere of a New York Christmas film.

Practical info: open from November through April, with prices ranging from $12 to $20 depending on the period. Online booking is highly recommended, especially at weekends. The rink also offers skate rental on-site for $9.
The rink at Rockefeller Center: the ultimate icon
It’s impossible to talk about skating in New York without mentioning the most famous rink in the world: The Rink at Rockefeller Center. Dominated by the imposing Christmas tree and surrounded by international flags, this small rink measuring 36 by 18 metres attracts millions of visitors every year.
Be warned: prices are high ($25 to $40 depending on the period) and bookings have to be made weeks in advance. The 90-minute experience includes skate hire. Visit during the week or early in the morning to avoid the crowds and take full advantage of this legendary moment.
The Brookfield Ice Rink in the Financial District
Located on the plaza of Brookfield Place near the World Trade Center, this high-end outdoor rink offers a unique experience led by Olympic champions. Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov, former US Olympic skaters, personally supervise the training programmes and offer exceptional private lessons.
Plus: more affordable rates than Rockefeller Center (around $15 to $25), and close proximity to the 9/11 Memorial and One World Observatory. Perfect for combining skating with a visit to the Financial District.
The Manhattan West skating rink: the modern one
The Manhattan West skating rink, located between Penn Station and Hudson Yards, represents the new generation of New York skating rinks. Located in the Manhattan West development plaza, it offers an ultra-modern setting with contemporary skyscrapers as a backdrop.
Key features include easy access via Penn Station and several subway lines, competitive prices, and a modern ambience with sophisticated LED lighting. The rink also benefits from its proximity to the restaurants and shops of the Manhattan West complex.
Authentic neighbourhood rinks
Bryant Park Winter Village
The Bryant Park rink offers an exceptional free alternative to the one in Rockefeller Center. Surrounded by the charming Winter Village Christmas Market, this spacious rink allows you to skate in a more relaxed atmosphere while enjoying the craft shops and food stalls.
The best part: access to the rink is free, so all you pay is skate hire ($20). Special opening from October through March, with extended opening times during the festive season.
This is my favourite rink in New York, as it’s big enough even during the busiest times. The Christmas market gives it a warm atmosphere and skating amidst the skyscrapers of Midtown is an incredible experience.
Davis Center ice rink: the little-known rink in Central Park
Located in the northern part of Central Park, near the Harlem Meer, the Lasker Rink represents the best value for money in the city. This spacious rink offers an authentic experience away from the tourist hustle and bustle.
The benefits: affordable prices ($8 to $12), far fewer crowds, and a unique local atmosphere. The rink also hosts skating lessons for all levels.
Outdoor rinks in Brooklyn
LeFrak Center rink in Prospect Park
Brooklyn offers a unique skating experience at the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park. This modern, eco-friendly rink offers 600 metres of winding tracks that wind around a picturesque lake.
A remarkable feature: the tracks follow the natural contours of the terrain, creating a skating experience akin to Nordic skating. Skate hire available, and perfect for families with dedicated areas for beginners.
Domino Park: an unbeatable view of Manhattan
The Domino Park skating rink in Williamsburg offers one of the most spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and theEast River. This seasonal ice rink, set in the former Domino sugar factory, combines industrial history and modernity.
The main attraction: skating with Manhattan in front of you is particularly magical at sunset. Easy access from Manhattan via metro line L. The rink also hosts special events and DJ nights during the winter season.
Roebling rink in Brooklyn Bridge Park
The rink in Brooklyn Bridge Park offers the most iconic perspective of all: skating under the legendary Brooklyn Bridge with the Lower Manhattan skyline in the background. Located in Pier 2, this temporary ice rink creates one of the most photographed experiences in New York.
A unique highlight: the combination of the historic bridge, the skyscrapers of the Financial District and theEast River creates an absolutely magical setting. Easily accessible from Manhattan by crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on foot or via the A/C underground lines to High Street-Brooklyn Bridge.

Practical tips for a successful experience
When to go and what to wear
The best time to go is from December to February, when the winter atmosphere is at its height. Choose weekday mornings to avoid the crowds, especially between 10am and 2pm.
Essential equipment: wear warm but not too thick clothing to keep you mobile. Gloves and a hat are essential. Avoid long scarves, which could be dangerous on the ice.
Bookings and prices
Plan ahead: popular rinks such as Rockefeller Center and Wollman Rink sell out quickly. Book at least 2 weeks before your visit, especially between Thanksgiving and New Year.
Budget tip: combine your skating session with other free activities such as exploring the Christmas markets or visiting the decorated windows of Fifth Avenue department stores.
The experience beyond skating
Atmosphere and gastronomy
Each ice rink offers its own ecosystem of activities. In Bryant Park, explore the artisan market and enjoy authentic hot chocolate. Near Rockefeller Center, treat yourself to a gourmet break in one of Midtown Manhattan‘s many restaurants.
Bonus: many ice rinks offer themed evenings with special music and lighting, especially during the festive season. Check out the special programmes before your visit.
New York’s ice rinks are more than just sports facilities; they are windows on the city’s winter soul. Every time you skate, you get a little closer to the authentic New York winter experience, the one that the locals live through and that transforms this bustling metropolis into a magical playground under the snow.
