Jones Beach

Located less than 20 miles from New York City, Jones Beach Island is one of the outer barrier islands off the southern coast of Long Island. It covers an area of 28.5 kilometres and is about 1 kilometre wide.

Jones Beach State Park is the best known of the island’s public beaches. This destination is a major tourist attraction in the New York area during the summer months. With its white sandy beach and wide range of activities, it welcomes 6 million visitors a year.

There’s swimming, fishing (a regional night fishing license is required after sunset), miniature golf, shuffleboard, basketball, biking and water sports. Or you can simply take a stroll while watching the beautiful scenery and the flock of sea birds slowly flapping their wings.

Good to know!

The park’s shopping centre closes at midnight during the summer months and the beach closes at sunset. Swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are on duty.

Surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing are permitted at several locations along the waterfront. Kayaks and windsurfers can be set up at Field 10 along the north shore of Jones Beach. The boat basin, located at the west end of the park, allows boaters to use the park during the day throughout the boating season.

Please note that pets are not allowed!

The park offers many events such as the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach each Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July fireworks show, concerts at the theatre, cartoon shows, softball and volleyball league tournaments, and nature centre programs.

How to get there?

Jones Beach Island is accessible from Long Island at its western end via Meadowbrook State Parkway to Merrick, Loop Drive to Long Beach and Wantagh State Parkway to Wantagh. Its eastern end is connected to Babylon and Fire Island by the Robert Moses Causeway. The Ocean Parkway links the three causeways and runs along the island.

You can also take the ferry to Great South Bay, or access it by private boat.
