Why did you want to compare New York hotels?
We were asked this question and we’d like to answer it to explain our choice of hotels. The impetus came after noticing that we often find the same hotels highlighted. The idea was to try out hotels that had opened recently and had little visibility or reviews. The hotels tested were either new or recently renovated. The hotels were visited anonymously and none of them invited us or paid us. We selected the hotels that we wanted to test and we will only present those that we liked; we will not talk about the hotels that disappointed us. Other tests will be added in the coming months.
Our opinion of hotels in New York
You’re here to find out which are the best hotels in New York City, if not the ultimate hotel in our test. So without further ado, if we had to recommend just one, it would be The Wall Street.
The Wall Street Hotel opened in 2021 and didn’t even have 100 reviews when we decided to check in. Although located in lower Manhattan, it is our favourite, offering exceptional services for the price of the stay. A five-star hotel at the price of a four-star hotel, the quality of service and facilities are beyond reproach.
The Pendry Manhattan West opened at the end of 2021 and is the most luxurious hotel in the comparison. If you have the budget, this is a unique experience. The hotel offers incredible comfort, with spacious rooms, very comfortable bedding and attentive staff. The soundproofing and decor are excellent, and its location close to Hudson Yards and fairly central to Manhattan is a huge plus.
The Arlo Hotels group celebrated the opening of the Arlo Midtown on 27 May 2021, its contemporary hotel nestling on 38th Street, the best location of the hotels in the comparison. This 4-star hotel is ideal for a couple with its Atrium Bar in the heart of the hotel playing music and a very relaxed vibe. The double rooms are a little cramped, but offer 4-star comfort. The only slight downside is that some of the communal areas show wear and tear, but nothing serious.
The Park Lane was given a facelift in 2021, on the edge of Central Park and 5th Avenue, and is a sought-after location that fits in perfectly with the hotel’s Art Deco style. If space in the room is an important consideration, then this is the hotel for you.
All the hotels in our comparison have free wifi.
Where are the hotels in the city?
Hotels range from Central Park to Times Square to the Statue of Liberty, but there’s nothing like a map to show you their district. They are listed from south to north.
- The Wall Street Hôtel in the south
- The Hoxton, Williamsburg in Brooklyn
- Aloft in Chelsea
- NH Collection hôtel south of Bryant Park.
- Pendry Manhattan West north of Chelsea
- Arlo Midtown in the Garment District
- Springhill Suites in Times Square
- Tempo by Hilton in Times Square
- Motto by Hilton in Times Square
- Park Lane south of Central Park
The most frequently asked questions about hotels in New York
It’s the question we’re most often asked, but finding a hotel in New York really depends on a multitude of factors and isn’t just a simple search. The city that never sleeps offers such a vast array of accommodation options that it can seem daunting to make a choice. Your priorities play a major role: are you looking for luxury, proximity to tourist attractions, a quiet neighbourhood, or perhaps a compromise between budget and location? What’s more, the season, the length of your stay, and current events in the city can all influence cost and availability.
With five distinct boroughs, hundreds of neighbourhoods and thousands of hotels, concisely answering the question “where to find a hotel in New York” is a challenge in itself. It’s a complex puzzle that requires a thorough understanding of your personal needs and expectations to be solved optimally.
If one of your main criteria during your stay in New York is to minimise the use of transport, the best place to stay would be in the heart of Manhattan, particularly in areas such as Midtown. This central area is home to many tourist attractions, including Times Square, Rockefeller Center, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) and Broadway. By staying here, you will be within walking distance of many places of interest and will also have easy access to other areas thanks to the many metro lines that converge on this part of the city. It’s ideal for those who want to make the most of their time and avoid unnecessary travel.
New York is reputed to be one of the most expensive cities in the United States, but it is entirely possible to find affordable accommodation if you know where to look. Neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Manhattan, such as Queens or Brooklyn, often offer cheaper rates.
Now, here’s not one cheap New York hotel, but two! The two cheapest hotels in New York are in Brooklyn, with the F underground line nearby, taking you to Times Square in less than an hour. The first is The Lodge Red Hook and the second is Liberty View Brooklyn Hotel, a little further south than the first, but just as highly rated on various platforms. Both hotels offer rooms for around €100, depending on the period. Forget Williamsburg in Brooklyn, a district that over the years has become a trendy area with increasingly expensive overnight stays.
For those wishing to escape the constant hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps, there are several quiet neighbourhoods that offer a more residential atmosphere. Upper West Side is one such neighbourhood: bordering Central Park, it offers a relaxed environment with tree-lined streets, historic brownstones and neighbourhood cafés. Another option would be Greenwich Village, which, despite its popularity, has managed to retain a village atmosphere with its picturesque alleyways and small squares. For those who don’t mind getting away from Manhattan, Brooklyn’s DUMBO district offers both tranquillity and stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. These areas guarantee a good night’s rest after a day spent exploring the city.
Hotel room rates in New York vary considerably depending on the district, the category of hotel, the season and the events taking place in the city. In budget establishments or youth hostels on the outskirts of Manhattan, you could find rooms from $90 to $180 per night. In the more central areas of Manhattan, for a three-star hotel, expect to pay between $180 and $350 per night. Luxury establishments or well-located hotels can charge from $300 to $1,000 per night or more. It is always advisable to compare prices, check customer reviews and book in advance to get the best deals.
