A little history of the famous chocolate treats
Forrest Mars, Sr. created the famous M&M’s in the 1930s. The idea came to him during the Spanish Civil War, when he saw soldiers eating sweets coated in a sugar shell to prevent the chocolate from melting.
After obtaining a patent for this creation, production began in New Jersey. The original brand name was M&M’s Limited, and the chocolate used came from Hershey’s. The two “M “s represent the names of Mr Mars and Bruce Murrie, son of the owner of Hershey’s Company.
In 1954, M&M’s with peanut butter were introduced to the market. At first, these sweets were coated with a brown layer. Other colours and flavours were added later. The popularity of M&M’s exploded thanks to the catchy slogan “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand”. Production was then extended to red, yellow and green.
