The history of Williamsburg

Williamsburg has a rich history that is still reflected in its streets today. It was named after Jonathan Williams, a military engineer who mapped the area in the early 19th century. Originally founded as part of the city of Bushwick, it was annexed by Brooklyn in 1855, marking the beginning of its rise.

In the 19th century, the district became a major industrial centre, thanks to companies such as the Domino sugar factory. Its history is also marked by immigration, with waves of Europeans, particularly Germans, Poles, Italians and Jews, shaping its multicultural identity. The opening of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903 facilitated the arrival of the Orthodox Jewish community, which is still very present today.

After an industrial decline in the 1970s, Williamsburg attracted artists, transforming the old warehouses into creative spaces. This renaissance led to a wave of gentrification in the 1990s, with the arrival of new residents and a rapid transformation of the district.
